The One with the River

This is a quiet corner with my favorite books on earth. This time "The Mill on the Floss"

Welcome

Dearest reader,

This digital corner is for you to know about different stories. The Mill on the Floss, written by George Eliot, is a Victorian novel published in 1860. The writer of the novel was a woman named Mary Ann Evans, but she used a pen name to be able to write freely and publish her works at that time, without the judgment of people. The Mill on the Floss is a passionate story about an intelligent woman with strong desires. In the story, we can see how that woman suffers from the disapproval of her family and society. Also, we can think that Eliot tried to write about her life through this novel, touching on really important points that she suffered in real life.

"We can never give up longing and wishing while we are alive. There are certain things we feel are beautiful and good, and we must hunger after them."

Current Thoughts

Latest annotation (Chapter 3): Maggie's struggle with her hair in this chapter feels like such a potent metaphor for her entire existence, the wildness she tries to contain, and the societal expectations.
